If you're dealing with acne spots or uneven skin tone, you've probably already heard of salicylic acid and vitamin C. Both are powerful active ingredients, but they work in very different ways. Using them correctly—in the right order and at the right time—makes all the difference between seeing real results and feeling lost with your routine.
What does each one do?
Vitamin C: Brightens and Protects
Vitamin C (in its most active form, L-ascorbic acid) acts on spots by inhibiting the tyrosinase enzyme, which is responsible for producing melanin. By reducing pigment production, dark spots progressively lighten. Additionally, vitamin C is an antioxidant that protects the skin from damage caused by UV rays and pollution, making it ideal for morning use.
It works best on already formed spots (existing hyperpigmentation) and as preventive maintenance.
Salicylic Acid: Exfoliates and Unclogs
Salicylic acid is a BHA (beta hydroxy acid) that penetrates deep into the pores due to its oil solubility. It chemically exfoliates dead cells, accelerates cell renewal, and helps superficial spots disappear faster. It also regulates oil production and prevents new breakouts, making it especially valuable for skin with active acne.
It works best on recent and active spots, especially those caused by acne.
Are they compatible? Can they be used together?
Yes, they are perfectly compatible—but at different times of the day. Mixing them at the same time can cause unnecessary irritation and reduce the effectiveness of salicylic acid (which needs an acidic pH to work, and vitamin C is also acidic). The ideal formula is simple: vitamin C in the morning, salicylic acid at night.
The ideal routine for treating spots with both active ingredients
Morning: Vitamin C + Protection
- Cleanse your face.
- Apply MAHU Facial Serum with Vitamin C: its combination of L-ascorbic acid, ferulic acid, and camu camu maximizes the stability and effectiveness of the active ingredient.
- Hydrate.
- SPF 50 sunscreen. Without this, everything else loses effectiveness.
Night: Salicylic Acid + Renewal
- Remove makeup and cleanse thoroughly.
- Apply MAHU Depigmenting Toner with Salicylic Acid: 8 to 10 drops on cotton, apply to the entire area, gently patting. Leave on overnight.
- The next day, rinse with water and repeat.
Which one to use if I can only choose one?
It depends on your skin:
- If you have active acne and recent spots: start with Depigmenting Toner with Salicylic Acid. First control the acne, then add vitamin C.
- If you have old spots or uneven tone without active acne: Serum with Vitamin C is your best starting point.
- If you want to tackle spots from both fronts: the MAHU Depigmenting Kit includes both products together.
Common mistakes when using these active ingredients
- Not using sunscreen: salicylic acid makes skin more sensitive to the sun. Without SPF, spots worsen.
- Over-exfoliating: using the toner more than once a day or combining it with other exfoliants can irritate the skin and worsen hyperpigmentation.
- Expecting results in 3 days: skin takes 4 to 8 weeks to show visible changes. Consistency is key.
